Risks & Watch Out
  • Green wood splits while drying.
  • Paint drips ruin finish.
  • Seal end grain.
  • Thin coats. Dry between.
Build Process — 4 Phases
  1. 1 Frame the seat
    • Cut and assemble the seat rails.
    • Check for square.
    • Clamp and screw.
    Tip: Pre-drill to prevent splits.
  2. 2 Fit the back slats
    • Position slats evenly.
    • Secure to top and bottom rail.
    • Keep equal spacing.
    Tip: Use a spacer block.
  3. 3 Assemble arms & legs
    • Attach front & back legs.
    • Mount armrests level.
    • Reinforce with supports.
    Tip: Dry fit everything first.
  4. 4 Sand, paint, protect
    • Sand all surfaces smooth.
    • Prime and paint slats.
    • Let cure 2 days.
    Tip: Paint thin coats.
Safety First
Wear gloves

Measure twice. Cut once. Think always.

▶ Output

One garden chair, sealed against weather and ready for two seasons of outdoor service before any maintenance.

Use teak or oak instead of softwood for a chair that outlasts the painter.

An untreated chair left outdoors will warp, rot, and split within one rainy winter. Sealing the end-grain is not optional.
✓ Verify (No Instruments)
  • All four legs touch the floor at once. Wobble means a leg is long; trim with a flush-cut saw, do not shim.
  • Diagonals across the seat frame match within 2 mm.
  • Paint is fully dry to the touch and shows no tackiness after 48 hours.
  • End-grain is sealed; water beads on the painted edges instead of soaking in.
↻ Common Failures & Recovery
  • Frame racks during glue-up — release clamps, square with a stick across the diagonals, re-clamp before the glue grabs.
  • Paint runs in the corners — lighter coats, brush vertically on the slats, horizontally on the rails. Three thin coats beat one thick one.
  • Slats split when screwing — pre-drill 80% of the screw diameter; for hardwoods, use a tapered countersink.
  • Glue squeezes out and dries on the surface — wipe wet glue with a damp cloth before clamping; once dry, scrape with a chisel held flat.

Why a Mondrian chair?
